In a 2026 survey, men were asked how much they planned to save in 2026. And do you know what the average answer was?

£9,360 by the end of the year.

Ambitious right or unrealistic? Let’s look at the actual data.

  • 39% of adults in the UK have less than £1,000 in savings

  • That means that 4 in 10 people couldn’t survive one month without getting paid.

Interestingly - in the same study ‘dads’ ranked as the worst savers with only 13% of respondents saying they considered ‘dads’ good with money.

What’s the answer? Here’s two techniques I’ve used for 10 years now to boost my savings:

  • The 10% rule - I put at least 10% of my earnings into longer term savings and investments.

  • These payments are automatic - I don’t think about them, they just happen. I set them up once and forget about them.
